File Homestead Exemption

When you purchase a home or change the deed AND you are the owner-occupant of that home, you may be eligible for a property tax deduction called a Homestead Exemption.

To be eligible, you must own the home and it must be your legal residence as of January 1st of the effective year. Rental properties and vacant land do not qualify for Homestead Exemption. You are not eligible if you or your spouse currently file for Homestead Exemption on another property in Georgia or any other state.

Requirements for filing for Homestead Exemption as well as deduction amounts may vary by county. Some may offer online application while others may require in person filing.

The deadline to file for Homestead Exemption in most counties is April 1st. Applications received after April 1st will be applied to the following year.
